Track the performance of altcoins versus Bitcoin in real-time. Identify the optimal moments to rotate between BTC and altcoins for maximum portfolio returns.

The Altcoin Season Index is a metric that measures how altcoins (all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin) are performing relative to Bitcoin over a specific time period. It answers a simple but crucial question: should you be holding Bitcoin or altcoins right now?
The index works by analyzing the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization (excluding stablecoins) and calculating what percentage have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days. When more than 75% of these altcoins beat Bitcoin's returns, we're officially in "Altcoin Season." When fewer than 25% outperform BTC, it's "Bitcoin Season."
This concept originated from observing historical crypto market cycles. After Bitcoin makes significant moves, capital often flows into altcoins seeking higher returns. Understanding these rotations helps investors position their portfolios ahead of major moves, rather than chasing performance after the fact.
The index divides market conditions into three distinct phases, each suggesting different portfolio strategies.
Bitcoin is significantly outperforming most altcoins. Consider concentrating on BTC.
Mixed performance across the market. Selective altcoin exposure may be appropriate.
Altcoins are broadly outperforming Bitcoin. Time to diversify into quality alts.
The difference in returns between Bitcoin and altcoins during their respective "seasons" can be dramatic. During strong altcoin seasons, some altcoins have returned 10x, 20x, or even higher multiples while Bitcoin moved only 50-100%. Conversely, during Bitcoin-dominant periods, many altcoins lose 50-80% of their value against BTC.
By tracking the Altcoin Season Index, you can adopt a dynamic allocation strategy. The basic principle is straightforward: increase altcoin exposure when the index trends toward altcoin season, and consolidate into Bitcoin when the index indicates Bitcoin dominance.
This doesn't mean you should go 100% into altcoins during altcoin season or 100% into Bitcoin otherwise. Rather, the index helps inform your allocation percentages. Perhaps you maintain a 60% BTC / 40% altcoin split as your baseline, then shift to 40/60 during confirmed altcoin season, or 80/20 during Bitcoin season.
The key is avoiding the common mistake of holding maximum altcoin positions during Bitcoin-dominant phases, which can devastate portfolio value. Many investors who bought altcoins near market tops have watched them lose 90%+ against Bitcoin during subsequent Bitcoin seasons.
Crypto market history shows recurring patterns in BTC/altcoin rotations. Typically, a cycle begins with Bitcoin leading the market. During this phase, Bitcoin's dominance increases as investors seek the relative safety of the largest cryptocurrency. New money entering the market tends to flow to Bitcoin first.
Once Bitcoin establishes a new price range and volatility decreases, capital begins rotating into Ethereum and large-cap altcoins. If the bullish trend continues, money flows further down the market cap spectrum into mid-caps and eventually small-caps. This is when altcoin season truly takes off.
The transition from Bitcoin season to altcoin season is often gradual, typically lasting several weeks. Our index tracks this progression in real-time, helping you identify when the rotation is beginning rather than after it's already in full swing.
It's worth noting that not all altcoins perform equally during altcoin season. Quality projects with strong fundamentals, active development, and growing adoption tend to outperform. The index tells you when conditions favor altcoins generally, but selecting which altcoins to hold remains an important decision.
Our Altcoin Season Index is calculated using data from CoinGecko, one of the most comprehensive cryptocurrency data providers. We analyze the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins (USDT, USDC, etc.) since they're pegged to fiat currencies.
For each qualifying cryptocurrency, we compare its 90-day return against Bitcoin's 90-day return. An altcoin "outperforms" Bitcoin if its percentage gain exceeds BTC's, or if its percentage loss is smaller than BTC's during downturns.
The final index value represents the percentage of analyzed altcoins currently outperforming Bitcoin. This gives you an objective, data-driven view of market conditions that updates throughout the day as prices change.
